Located in the Mopan Maya community of San Jose Succotz, it is just a few minutes from the Belize Western Border and stands as the second largest Maya City in Belize. Xunantunich, in Yucatec Maya, translate to “Maiden of the Rock” or “Stone Woman”. After crossing the Mopan River, on an antique styled hand cranked ferry, it will then consist of a short hike up the hill to the temples where your guide will educate you on this ancient civilization.
Xunantunich is a late classic city known for its continuity in social politics and development. While other great cities such as Tikal, Caracol and Naranjo began their decline, this city was striving with a vibrant society. Hike up its mounds, into the walls of these great palaces, and temples, and learn about the importance of its people, ceremonies, rituals and practices; performed to withstand the challenges of the collapse of surrounding cities.
Above the tallest structures over 133 feet from its base, the stucco frieze was left behind by this great civilization, interpreted by notable archaeologists to tell us the significance of this city; strategically built atop a hill. Enjoy the view that is not only sacred, panoramic but also a spiritual and divine in connection with the Mayas.
